TCGS #28 - Ruin This Show
Chris has to deal with the consequences after going on national television and announcing on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon that he wanted everyone to come to the next taping of TCGS and attempt to ruin the show. No touching the panel. No touching equipment. Everything else was fair game. What resulted was a cacophony of chaos as performers and audience members alike came out in droves to ruin the Chris Gethard Show. Chris’ only ally for the night was CollegeHumor’s Jeff Rubin who made his first appearance on the show and waded through the insanity with Chris. Aside from Jeff the only other rest from the chaos were the amazing and hilarious dance routines of the bad-ass Cocoon Central Dance Team. In the end, Chris asked the audience to ruin the show, and the audience delivered. Consider this show ruined.

A lowlight of my run on this series happened last night, when Chris and I exchanged prolonged glances of disappointment throughout the night.
But in the weird world of Chris Gethard, that makes this episode a huge success.

No Pants Subway Ride 2k11 this Sunday!
Wait a second… writing “2k” is worthless, isn’t it? I might as well have written 2012. Would’ve saved so much time if I had only written a 0 instead of a “k” as I wouldn’t have needed to write this paragraph of explanation as to why I should be writing 0 instead of “k”.
Also, if you haven’t funded Matt Adam’s Kickstarter for an Improv Everywhere doc, watch the segment above! It’s great! That’s how great the entire doc will be if it gets funded!
Happy 2012, ya dingos.
Comments (View)To celebrate 10 years of The No Pants Subway Ride, director Matt Adams made this video telling the story of the very first event in 2002. It features an interview with a woman who was on the train that day and wound up being the star of the video. This footage was shot as part of a documentary Adams is making about Improv Everywhere, which you can support on Kickstarter.
The 2012 No Pants Subway Ride is this Sunday in New York and dozens of other cities around the world.
This might just be the greatest thing I made this year. It’s weird, quirky, spontaneous and raw, and has a scene in which Rob Malone, Chris Gethard and I film each other filming each other taking a piss in public.
I’ve never seen JD so befuddled as he was while watching this for the first time.
Hope ya dig. …And happy new year!
Comments (View)TCGS HOLIDAY SPECIAL - THE SPIRIT OF GETHARD
After we cancelled the December 28th taping of The Chris Gethard Show, Rob “The Greatest Dancer in the World” Malone and Keith “Banana Man” Haskel approached the TCGS team to see if they could produce an hour long Holiday Special to broadcast instead of airing a re-run. We agreed to let them film their hour-long special as long as they shot, produced, planned, and edited the entire episode themselves and allowed the rest of the team to take the week off and relax. They would have no creative oversight from the TCGS staff and if they accepted, they would have to be responsible for the entire hour. They Accepted. This is that Holiday Special.

Comments (View)Improv Everywhere: MP3 Experiment 8
As 2011 comes to a close, I’ve been reflecting upon the fun things I worked on this year. Kicking off the nostalgia trip comes July 16th’s Improv Everywhere MP3 Experiment 8. I co-produced and shot it, and had 8 days to edit the hour-long 9-camera experience into one 6-minute video. ’Twas intense, and I still wish I had one more day to finesse it, but I’m happy with the finished product. The dumb push in transition that comes in at 3:50 will forever make me giggle.
Bonus: The BBC interviewed Charlie and I about it (my first video interview ever).
Related/unrelated: If you’ve got some spare dough and support Improv Everywhere, please consider donating to Matt Adam’s Kickstarter campaign for a feature length Improv Everywhere documentary.

Comments (View)Comments (View)TCGS #26 - Monologues Only
A lot people accuse our show of not being a real late night show. So, we decided to take their accusations head on and do the most “late night talk show” thing we could possibly imagine: Monologue jokes— an entire hour’s worth. Our audience sent in hundreds of jokes and we forced Chris to perform them unrehearsed in the style of a more traditional late night host. If Chris performed enough jokes correctly he would be rewarded. Likewise if he messed up enough jokes he would be punished. The awkwardness of the night was only balanced by our ridiculously cool musical guest Kevin Devine. Definitely a night to remember. Tune in and find out if we have what it takes to be called a “real” late night talk show.

Comments (View)2010 in Review.
Here are some things about 2010 worth archiving. I tried my best to avoid the recency effect:
MUSIC:
Album of the Year LCD Soundsystem’s “This Is Happening”.
- Hits the spot for a dancing by yourself fest or massive party. Irresistible riffs. Quirky. Catchy. Translates perfect live. Cool music video for “Drunk Girls”. Even the live London Sessions studio recording rocks. James Murphy for the win.
Other awesome albums:
- Holy Fuck “Latin” (prog rock at its finest)
- Social Network Soundtrack (another awesome Nine Inch Nails album)
- Kanye West “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” (“All Of The Lights” makes my ears want to vomit, but everything else is dope)
- Das Racist “Sit Down, Man” and ”Shut Up, Dude” (these guys are the Indian Beastie Boys)
- Spoon “Transference” (straight up awesome rock, no frills needed)
- Free Energy “Free Energy” (picking up the pop-rock baton that Weezer dropped)
- Gorillaz “Plastic Beach” (tracks 4-6 make me go nuts)
- Wavves “King of the Beach” (if Green Day’s Dookie came out in 2010, it’d sound like this)
- Arcade Fire “Suburbs” (this band was perfect in 2010, too perfect)
- Big Boi “Sir Lucious Left Foot” (half of Outkast is still Outkast)
Best Singles:
- Kanye West - Power
- Cee Lo - Fuck You
- Reggie Watts - Fuck Shit Stack
- Das Racist - Who’s That Brooown!
- Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross - In Motion
Artist Most Listened To: Deerhoof
INTERNET VIDEOS:
- Insane Clown Posse “Miracles” - Ignorant humans bring on the lulz!
- angry ibex - If I could interview any ibex in the world, it’d be this one.
- trololo - If I made a best of 1976 list, this song would’ve been number 1.
- dog dancing meringue - This dog is a better dancer than Michael Jackson (because MJ is dead)
- Double Rainbow - I will forever refer to something as “double rainbow” instead of “intense”
- Backin Up/Bed Intruder Song - One of the few acceptable uses of auto-tuning, the Gregory Brothers killed it in 2010 by turning quirky news stories into awesome songs.
- Broad City “Yoga” - A female version of Curb Your Enthusiasm, Broad City was my favorite web series this year.
- meet the sloths - Ugly animals are cuuuuuuuuute
MOVIES:
- Moon (released in 2009, but I didn’t see it ‘till this year. Sam Rockwell is on the moon and finds his own dead body. Whaaaaat!?!?!)
- Black Swan (maybe the only victim of the recency effect, or maybe just plain awesome [it’s the latter])
- Exit Through The Gift Shop (3 seconds of my Poster Boy video is in it!)
- Babies (the most beautifully shot documentary I’ve ever seen)
- Avatar (so epic it’s still worth mentioning)
TECHNOLOGY:
I don’t own either of these, but they’re THE FUTURE:
- Microsoft Kinect - 3D camera for Xbox that tracks your movements so you don’t need a remote. Cool as is, but the hacks are what have me hyped.
- iPad - Fuck laptops!
MOST DESPICABLE:
- BP Oil Spill - Earth is doomed :-(
NARCISSISM:
Although not a prolific year for the KSKILL brand (only released 6 videos on my YouTube account), I did help make a bunch of videos for other people. Here are my favorite productions to have worked on this year:
- Improv Everywhere’s MP3 Experiment 7 (editor, co-producer, shooter): 3,000 people listen to the same MP3, ending in a massive mummy party in Bryant Park. This was the most draining thing I worked on this year, and by far my favorite. Hit 1,000,000 views within 3 weeks!
- Aakash Nihalani’s STOP POP & ROLL (shooter, editor) - Aakash cube-a-fies a stop sign in Brooklyn, and we pay homage to street artists along the way.
- Training Wheels (producer, editor, writer)- Learning how to ride a bike was my resolution of 2009, and getting a video featured on The Daily What was one of my goals for 2010. 2 Birds, one awkward video.
- Poster Boy “Gone Fishin” (shooter, editor) - Shot in 2009 but delayed the release due to legal issues. I’m happy we finally released this to help promote PB’s new book.
- Beard Pals (producer, writer, actor) - I might re-edit it some day as it runs a little long, but I love how stupid this video is! Written the night before we shot it, and I love the spontaneous wacky energy that came with the lack of preparation. One of my goals for 2k11 is to make more spur of the moment videos.
- The Boy Who Cried Gay (producer, writer, editor) - This video had so much potential, but didn’t deliver. Shot over the course of 2 years, I lost focus along the way and over-edited it. Fun nonetheless.
- Spoiler Alert - The first thing I ever shot on a DSLR. Also, Jason Eppink is the man.
- Improv Everywhere (shooter, blurs) - MP3 Experiment 7, Black Tie Beach, The Tourist Lane, No Underwear 2k10 (April Fools), No Pants 2k10, and a couple unreleased ones. Not only did shooting for IE teach me how to shoot, but this has been one of my favorite gigs to date. More fun stuff to come from these guys in 2k11.
- Delocated Season 2 (assistant editor) - I got paid to work on an awesome show for [adult swim]. Fuck yeah!
- Lastly, I was on the Apprentice. Yeah!
LOOKING FORWARD:
My full-time job wraps up in January, and I’ll spend the next few months making a short film/pilot. Bryan Gaynor and I will be wrapping up our animated short, MATES. And I’m sure I’ll bust out a few sketch comedy and street art videos along the way. My resolution for 2011 is to stay focused and only work on projects that I love.
Cheers,
Keith Haskel 2010

Here are some obsolete breaking news stories from the past week:
- Jason Eppink and I Am released a video of Shadow Machine, part of THE UNDERBELLY PROJECT, an installation in which dozens of street artists took over the walls of an abandoned subway station. [via the new york times]
- Aakash Nihalani’s OVERLAP exhibition opened up at the Bose Pacia gallery. Das Racist was on hand at the after party, so I shot them performing “Who’s That? Brooooown!”.
- My friends at Last Pictures released their first pilot, Makin It. It runs 25 minutes, but the time flies by. It’s an extremely watchable highly entertaining show. Watch it, love it, share it.
- Street art pictured above is by Chencho. Hope to photograph more of his work soon.

Helloooooo six week vacation!
Comments (View)
It was a long edit, and as you can see, I’m exhausted. Shhhhhhhhhh!!!
We finished editing Monday. The episodes turned out great, and I want to thank our hard working post team.
Here’s one of our editors, Mike LaHaie, on the phone telling his mommy what a great job he did. Behind Mike, Will Cox oversees the color correct and obviously eavesdrops on the call.
Our other editor Jeff Buchanan takes a little ‘chill sesh’ on the floor of the color correct.
It’s all smiles as Post Coordinator Lindsay Washick and Supervising Producer Steve Ast pretend that my picture taking isn’t annoying them while they try to get work done.
Sound engineer Paul Hsu takes a ramen break from the sound mix.
He likes the band Cake. He LOVES the movie “Freddy Got Fingered”. He doesn’t know who John Coltrane is. He’s a “vegetarian” who eats fish. There’s a lot of chinks in the armor that we took great pleasure in constantly and mercilessly giving him a hard time about, but I don’t know where we’d be without the dedicated, enthusiastic, tireless, hard work of assistant editor Keith “Kskill” Haskel.
And finally, I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge our post intern, Tom Fitzpatrick. As he is demonstrating here, Tom’s main job was to make the edit tables go up and down. But really, he was there to make the post process in general a little more adorable. Thanks, Fitzy.
There’s no air date set as of yet for the second season. But now that we’re done with the edit and I’m not as crazed, I will (hopefully) be updating the blog more regularly with more photos and stories and whatsuchhaveyou’s from the season and the edit. And as soon as I get info on a premier date I’ll post it. So keep checking in to the blog for Season 2 info!

I’m very excited to announce that Jason Woliner and I have sold 3 movies to Judd Apatow and Universal! I am attached to star and Jason will direct.
One idea is tentatively titled “Let’s Do This” and is a road movie about two guys that work for a motivational speaking company.
Another idea is about two disgraced astronauts who have to go back to space to clear their names.
And the other idea is a movie based around Randy, my character from “Funny People.”
We’re currently working on all three ideas now and haven’t decided which we will go with first.
Needless to say, we are very excited to be working with Judd on these projects. Unfortunately, this does however put Jason and I’s plan to remake Short Circuit 2 (with myself playing the Michael McKean role in a revolutionary new makeup technique called “peachface”) on hold indefinitely.

What are your views on advertising?
Advertising is bizarro art. Both are cut from the same cloth, but what sets them apart is intent. Art is driven, at least in theory, by the desire to express oneself. Advertising is driven by the desire to promote a product or service. Often times the two overlap making it hard to tell the difference. As long as there’s money to be made there’ll be advertising. I can’t deny that. With development of technology and the market comes increasingly elaborate ad campaigns. Sometimes the campaigns are funny. Sometimes they’re artful. But one thing I’ll never accept is public advertising no matter how clever the campaign is.
